What is car sharing?

Car sharing is when you share a lift with another person. This is usually referred to as car pooling or liftshare

Will I need a  car to car share?

No car is required. A person can search for a lift as a passenger only.

Will my insurance premiums be affected?

The answer is no, as long as there is no profiteering involved (1988 Transport Act). Transporting large numbers of people would affect your status and it is advised the car insurance company is consulted first.

How does car share work?

By using our search form you are able to perform a search to find the people who live close to you and are travelling to a similar location. .

Is car sharing safe?

Every journey on public transport involves a degree of risk and car sharing with a someone unfamiliar can be a concern to some people, but the are steps you can take to ensure your safety.

  1. Do not exchange home addresses of telephone with your travelling companion before you meet them.

  2. Try to meet in a public place if at all possible.

  3. Inform a friend or family member of who you will be travelling with, when and to where.

  4. Ask you potential lift share companion to show his/her I.D.s - passports, student cards or driving licences - so you know you're travelling with the right person.

  5. You are under no obligation to share a lift. If you are in any doubt what so ever about your travelling companion, for any reason, you should not travel with them.

Can people find out where I live?


Travel2work does not require any personal information i.e. your house number or street name. When you a match is found the other party can only initially contact you via email.. Disclosing more detailed information is left to your discretion if you decide to arrange a car share.

Can Car Sharing really make a difference?


The number of single occupancy cars on every road, especially when commuting is very high. So sharing a lift will dramatically reduce emissions and congestion.

Sharing cars also means sharing costs. Car sharing one journey per week can save approximately £300 per year.
